England to Normandy transportation

Hello all.
We have been planning a trip to Normandy for a couple years now to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. I have all the lodging taken care of.
Traveling will be my family of 5 (my wife and I, plus 3 children 18/14/12 yo) I am trying to figure out the best (value and time) way to get from London to Normandy.
I am going to rent a car upon arrival in Normandy (not renting and driving in Paris) and returning it to Rouen where we will board a train for Paris.
I plan to depart London on June 1st and turn the car in on June 8th.

So my question is this. Being completely clueless on car rental options over there, is it better to fly from London to somewhere in Normany and rent (and if I do is it a lot extra to return it to a different location if we don't pick it up in Rouen?), take a ferry and rent the car from our terminus point, or just take the train? I understand the train is probably the easiest option, but also the longest.

Thanks in advance for offering your knowledge and experience!

I think kids may love the fast ferries from Southampton or other ports to Caen (Oustreham is name of Port) - rent car there. Book your Rouen - Paris train in advance for minor discounts - full fare is not bad for flexibility. For lots on trains and ferries check www.seat61.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com. https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/f...ing/ports/caen

No, normally there isn't any fee for picking up a car in one place in France and dropping it off in another.

I would probably look for those cheap EasyJet flights from various places in England to Paris or somewhere closer to Normandy, then rent your car there.

<<Oustreham is name of Port>> NO, Pal, it's Ouistreham. Spelling counts when you're traveling.
