England + Netherlands? Scotland?
Next April I am spending a week in England, renting a cottage near Gloucester. After that I will have 5 days (not counting my flight day at the end) and am not sure where to go. Possibilities are Scotland, Netherlands, or Southeast England/London. I will have a car but don't want to continually drive around -- would rather travel to an interesting area and spend several days touring there. Any suggestions? Thanks...

You can fly very cheaply (£30--50)
between London & Glasgow or London &
Amsterdam, but not between Scotland
and Holland. So you may be able to do all 3 from a base in south of england.
Doing a triangular trip will be
expensive unless you book well in advance.Alternatively you can also save
on the Scotland/Holland part by changing
flights in London(usually Gatwick)
Try Easyjet or Ryanair for cheap scuzzy
flights.
There is an overnight boat from Hull to Rotterdam.
Rotterdam.
On my first trip to Europe I was spending a few weeks on a foreign study program at Cambridge, and had planned to take a 4-day weekend in the middle of it and travel to Edinburgh. I was persuaded by some students to go to Amsterdam instead (a place which until then held no interest for me). Amsterdam was wonderful! It was a short, inexpensive flight out of London, and so different from England. I loved the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank house in particular. I really enjoyed it and have never regretted my decision. (I still need to go to Scotland though...)
P.S. If you go to London and Amsterdam you should ditch the car -- two cities with incredible public transportation systems, very easy to get around.
