We just returned from a London/Wales trip a week ago. We rented a car at the Victoria Station IN London and drove to Wales to see my son. The M4 highway drive was ok to Swansea, Wales, but all the other driving in London and along the country roads were VERY harried. (went to Swansea, Wales; Cardiff, Wales; Bath and Stonehenge -- stopping at Windsor Court on the way back to London. Then we drove back out of London to Hampton Court and Wimbledon the next day) My husband thought it would be "fun" to drive in the UK also, but after doing it this time, said "never again". We were lucky to get an upgrade to an automatic instead of a stick. We had 5 people in the car watching for signs and reminding my husband to "stay left" and telling him which lane to be in when going around the round-a-bouts. By the way, we rented a mid-sized wagon because we had 5 people and luggage. I definitely would NOT drive at night -- especially toward Stonehenge. Also, make sure you have very good maps. Ours were not adequate and the locals didn't seem to know where roads were. We LOVED England and Wales, but when we go back, we are taking the trains & buses.
