Engand/Wales
Hi

Hubby/I plan on going to England/Wales the end of April. What is the weather like that time of year? Has anyone rented a car? What's it like to drive? We want to see London and the country side and wildlife. What are some things to see and do in London? How about other small towns and Wales? Thanks.

My family was in Wales this summer. My father drove the rental car. We only had two times we all held our breath and prayed.
We brushed the vegetation on the side several times. It's so close! My father caught on quickly and had little trouble with all the sharp curves and round-abouts. I think the highway numbers, town names and such in parenthesis are ones you can connect with if you take the road listed before it. We didn't catch onto that right away.
As far as what you can see and do in London - that's a question where there is nowhere to begin the answer. Grab some tour books and dig in! There are also hundreds of comments about that in these sites. Do a search for London or something like that and enjoy hours of great reading! I'll dig out my journal and come back with some Wales comments.

I'm interested in hearing more about Wales, particularly North Wales. What were your favorite places? Any recommendations on B&Bs? Any places that you thought would be interesting but turned out not to be? We were thinking of driving from York to Wales and later from Wales to Bath. Any comments or suggested routes?

I really won't be able to comment on routes and such. It was all I could do to keep my eye on the road signs - I didn't take time to look at the big picture as my father and sister did. We did take a highway that followed mountain ridges and the views were absolutely lovely. We all shot a roll of film that afternoon. We had a great Sunday night outdoor grill supper at a pub called Y Goron Fach in Caernarfon. We had a classy and delicious dinner at Panhelig Arms in Aberdovey, Wales. That may not be very north, though. We stayed at a B&B that was my favorite, Trecastle Farm. Four foot thick walls, 500 years old. I like it a lot. That was where we stayed the night before we did Bath and other cities in England. I don't have the info, but we found it here on the net by searching Wales B&B's. Addresses for those sorts of sites have often been listed on this message board. Just do a search and you'll find a lot! I'm afraid I don't take detailed notes like other posters do, so all I can really say is that you'll love Wales! These are the comments my mother had:
"We had four adults in Wales and England for ten days in August. Can't help you with April weather. Driving a car in Wales isn't too tough, especially on the smaller roads...just be careful, because they're very narrow. We rented a car from EuropCar at the airport in Manchester, England - to Mold: Betws-y-Coed (interesting nooks and crannies):Caernarvon(I spelled it differently than my daughter) don't miss the castle: island of Anglesey with town of 38 letters: Harlech (another neat castle):Machynllech (the first capitol): Tywyn & Abergynolwyn for intersting coast and inland sights: and try a highway (maybe 470)across the Cambrian and the Brecon mtns. We fell in love with Wales. It's beautiful, restful, friendly, and relatively (compared with London) inexpensive.Just a great place to which we vow to return!
We especially liked two B&Bs out in the countryside. One is owned by Mrs. Jenny Hawkins, near Tywyn.Tanycoed Isaf, Bryncrug, Tywyn, Wales. This is near the famed waterfall and is very nice. Her phone and fax # is 01654 782639 (don't think she has email)

The other is Trecastle Farm, a dairy operation near Monmouth, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Mike Farmer (Mary). Check their website on Smoothhound.com under Monmouth (Trecastle Farm). Their email is [email protected]. Have fun!"

I stayed at the Penhelig Arms Hotel in Aberdovey, Wales last year. It is a great little 10 room hotel that has a wonderful restaurant (as another has also reported) and pub. I would recommend it highly. It is in central Wales - a classic seaside resort.
Martha
Hello,

We recently returned from England, Scotland, and Wales. First of all, rent a car with a trunk, and don't leave anything in sight or in your car overnight. We were given this advice the first day, and it turned out to be good advice. A couple staying at our b and b in caernarferon had most of their souvenirs and clothes stolen out of their car. This is apparently not uncommon. Just be cautious. On a brighter note, Cardiff had a very beautiful and ornate castle that is worth seeing. The coastline of Wales was awesome especially in the Snowdonia region. If you are there on a clear day, don't miss the train up snowdon mt from Llanberis. It is truly unforgettable. Caernarveron has a great castle, as well, that has a lot of historic interest. As far as England goes, Bath was a great town-don't miss the Roman Baths. Also, if you are interested in history, check out Stonehenge on your way from London to Bath. When you are in London, start out with a hop on hop off bus tour to get an overview of the city. Then check out what interests you most. Have fun!
