I sort of love the "overlook" of the city you get just below Sacre Coeur in Montmartre. There's also something very romantic about a picnic under the dappled shade in Place des Vosges.

I am very appreciative of all of the different perspectives provided by each of you. We don't get to practice for these special life experiences like an engagement so all input has been very helpful. So, a noisy cafe is definitely not a good idea and the Eiffel Tower location may not be the best for the two of us. I'll be looking up the other locations mentioned to see which may "fit the moment". Any other commentary or suggestions are welcome as I do want this to be remarkably special for her.

My son proposed to his girlfriend in front of the Eiffel Tower in 2008. She was thrilled! Apparently she didn't care if it was done in public. And everyone who has heard about it thinks it was a romantic proposal. I loved the idea because it was an opportunity for my family to be in Paris together and especially since he was thinking about proposing to her at a gun show!!! Now that is not a dream proposal.

I also like the view from Sacre Coeur. My parents were supposed to be married there. Don't recall why they were not.

But, my sister was proposed to at the chapel in Notre Dame where my parents were married. They were the first American military couple to be married in Notre Dame at the end of WWII. I thought that was pretty romantic.

My sister's beau carried the engagement ring all through a tour of Europe that was ending in Paris. He was a nervous wreck the entire trip! LOL!

Congratulations to you both and best wishes for a long and loving life together!!!

I think the time and the place will 'speak' to you when you are in Paris. It is very hard to envision a city that you have not been to. All the scenarios we have lined up really mean nothing to you since you have not been there to experience them. They are special to all of us though, as we have been there. Paris is an absolutely beautiful and romantic city. You will know when the time and place are right.

My H2B and I went to New York in Dec 2010, we had been together for 10 years and I had chosen my own ring, I knew he was going to propose in New York but I didn't know when or where.

We went out one evening, had the funniest meal at Bubba Gumps, saw an amazing show and were walking through Times Square, he took me up the glass steps and got down on one knee at the top. The magical thing was that were were surrounded by tourists and no one noticed a thing, it may have had something to do with the freezing cold but it was just perfect.

I have no idea where you should 'pop the question' but I would suggest that you don't set your plan in concrete, take that ring with you when you go out on an evening and Paris will show you when the time is right.

I wish you all the love and happiness for the future, please let us know what happens, I'm sure it will be magical....now I must crack on, it's my wedding in 2 weeks!

I love your idea of an outdoor cafe and engaging a street musician--accordian preferred, but that may just be me--on the other hand, an accordian is quintessentially Parisian in the tradition of every romantic Paris movie you've ever seen. The place you might consider is not far from the Eiffel Tower, in the 7th, with a view of it. Au Bon Accueil. You could call or get your hotel to call ahead to guarantee you a spot outdoors with view of the tower, wait until the lights start to sparkle on it (on the hour I think) and then show her some sparkle for her finger. The restaurant might even know of nearby sidewalk musicians who might be engaged to stroll by at the right time.

I can attest that the restaurant is romantic. When we were there and dined inside, the table had rose petals strewn about on it and one perfect candle. Whether there are others around or not, I'm sure she will love the setting, and your thoughtfulness in arranging it all. Besides, they serve really good food. Enjoy, you romantic devil, you.
