Are there any ferries that run from Elba to Sardinia (that can accomodate a car??)?

I am not aware of any direct service. I believe you need to go back to the Italian mainland (Piombino), then go to Livorno for a car ferry to either Olbia (Moby Lines) or nearby Golfo Aranci (Sardinia Ferries). There is spotty service from Elba direct to Livorno, but most ferries go to Piombino, which is closer to Elba. For Elba service, see www.toremar.it

Moby Lines competes with Toremar on the Elba-Portoferraio to Piombino route:

CORRECTION to my posting of 05/08/2003: From Elba Island to Sardinia, you DO need to go back to Piombino on the Italian Mainland, but do NOT need to travel north to Livorno from Piombino to catch the connecting ferry.

There is DIRECT ferry service from Piombino to Olbia on the ferry company "Linea dei Golfi" from April 1 through September 30: travel time from Piombino is 6.5 hours or more, and fares start at 18 Euros for daytime crossings, plus port fees of 2.15 Euros. Departure times and frequencies vary by week. During the rest of the year, you would need to travel to Livorno to catch the connecting ferry to Olbia (or Golfo Aranci on Sardinia Ferries).

Portoferraio (Elba) to Piombino is a one hour crossing on Moby Lines or Toremar (subsidiary of Tirrenia), with hourly services during the summer, less during the rest of the year. Fares start at 5.30 Euros on Toremar and 6.50 Euros on Moby Lines.

FURTHER CORRECTION: Linea dei Golfi has now extended their Piombino (Tuscan Coast) to Olbia service to year-round, with four or five daytime weekly departures from October through March. You must consult their website to see exact travel dates. www.lineadeigolfi.it

The ferry departs Piombino at 10:00 and arrives in Oblia at 16:30. There is also a night departure on certain days.

THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE FASTEST CROSSING TO SARDINIA FROM THE ITALIAN MAINLAND DURING THE WINTER MONTHS (when the Tirrenia Lines, Sardinia Ferries, and Moby Lines fast ferries don't operate).

Two brand-new car ferries are used on this route. The ships measure 186 metres (610 feet) in length, travel at 24 knots, and accommodate 190 cars, 130 campers, and 1000 passengers (of which 400 in cabins with facilities). There is a cafeteria, two bars with satellite TV, children's play area, solarium, shop and videogames on board.
