Eiffel tower vs. Troll

Hi

We all know that the Eiffel tower is one of the best known buildings in the world and it is visited by millions every year. It seems like if you want to attract the crowds you have to build something that stands out a bit...just look at Kuala Lumpur. Who knew much about KL before they built the Petronas Twin Towers...the worlds tallest buildings at that time. I feel that Norway (well at least Stavanger) lacks an attraction like that. But the fact is that we have made some amazing structures here in Norway but since we are so modest we hide it away Did you guys know that Norway is an oil producing nation? Well, because we are small country most of the oil that we produce is exported and that makes us the second or third largest oil exporter in the world. All the oil is made offshore and we have to build platforms to reach the oil. The climax came when building the Troll platform which is about 472 meters high! This thing weighed 656.000 tons when they pulled it out to the North Sea and it was the largest object moved by man at the time. The Eiffel tower weighs "only" 10.000 tons. So my suggestion is...when we are done with producing gas at the Troll field we take the platform back to Norway and place it in Stavanger so that it can become a tourist attraction . The only questions is...and pardon my French here...how the hell do you get a structure like this out of the water and place it on land?

Here is a picture showing the two structures: http://www.statoil.com/statoilcom/svg00990.nsf/Attachments/Troll/$FILE/Troll_illustrasjon.jpg

Mightn't it be easier just to drain the North Sea (with apologies to Lew Grade)?

Hopefully, George won't figure out that Norway has oil. Gard, re: structures -- with the incredible natural beauty of your fjords -- who needs man-made structures? I'll take the beauty of Norway any time over steel girders!

Hi

Yes, it is true that we have the fjords and mountains and I agree that it is really beautiful. I see pretty nice scenery every day but it would also be fun with a major structur in the middle of town
