It is not just the Eiffel tower. This has been circulating in European e-mails for two days now:

Turn everything off - On February 1st between 7:55 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Five minutes, not to save energy, but to create global awareness

Urgent: action against climate change On February 1st you can participate in the worldwide greatest action against climate change!!!

Various environmental organizations are asking the peoples of this planet to hold 5 minutes of silence: Everyone should turn off all lights, electricity etc. between 7:55 until 8 p.m. to bring attentionto other inhabitants, the media and politicians about the daily wasteof energy.

An act which takes only 5 minutes, which cost nothing, but shows the governments that climate change should be on the top agenda of world politics.

Why this date?

On February 1st the United Nations is publicizing the newest results andknowledge base on climate change.

SO...TURN OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Earth has been warming for 25000 years (with the exception of the mini Ice Age from about 1300-1700), and whether you turn your lights off for 5 min or forever it will continue to warm until it decides to get cold again.

I think it appropriate to note that from about 10,000 BC to about 1000 BC, the Earth was about 3 F warmer than it is today.

It should also be noted that the base year for which those upset about Global Warming start figuring the effects of the Industrial Revolution, 1850, was one of the coolest on record.

It will be interesting to see what happens when everyone turns their lights back on at the same time.

Hmmm. Seems to me that the political capitals of the world have been over-populated with dim bulbs for many years.

" it will continue to warm until it decides to get cold again"

Maybe, but that is not a big consolation to the Dutch.

Hi E,

The Dutch have chosen to extend their land area by building dikes.

I'm sure that they will be able to hold their own.

If they can't, they can migrate to other areas and teach the folks there how to build dikes.

It's not as if the ocean is going to rise dozens of meters overnight.

I was looking forward to having waterfront property, but it appears that the Atlantic wont' rise high enough.

Hi Bud,

How about 1 day per week in which no one uses any energy at all.

During the summer we can all walk around in bathing suits.

During the winter, we can sit in the dark and freeze.
