Edinburgh lodging

Any recommendations? Trying to stay close enough to walk to most attractions (Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, etc) and below 65gbp per night (single accommodation) B&B/Guest house. Other option is to do the hostel thing ... a little nervous about this after reading reports about filthy showers, no hot water, etc.

Try this website. There are numerous B&B's and hotels that you can choose from in your price bracket.

Marimets,

I would suggest the Ibis chain. It is right on the Miricle Mile and the rate is only 69 GBP per night. I have always had a good experience staying at other Ibis properties around Europe and this one has a great location as well.

When is Edinburgh on Business I stay in the Premier Lodge hotel on Lariston Place. Its a corporate hotel with not much charm but if you ask you can get rooms with fantastic views of the castle and its located just round the corner from the Grassmarket area so near to all the attractions. The best thing is its only £54 a night and the rooms are modern with king size beds.

Check out the Castle View Guest House. It is right in the middle of New Town, less than a block off Princes St., and very convenient to everything. We stayed there last month and liked it very much. The only downside is that it is up four flights of stairs with no lift, but that never seemed like a problem for us. It was nice and quiet at night.

They have several single rooms and the rate is £50. There is an availability form on the website, and it looks like they do have room(s) during the period you will be there.

I've also stayed at the Hotel Ibis that GregPCM100 mentioned, and it's a great value and right smack on the Royal Mile (not Miracle Mile - he may have been thinking about Chicago, LOL!). It's not fancy but it's inexpensive, clean and in a perfect location for exploring Edinburgh on foot. You can walk to all the attractions in the city center (Castle, Palace, St. Giles, Royal Mile, Princes St. etc.) Many restaurant, pubs and shopping choices nearby also. I've stayed there twice, both times in April, and paid £49.95 for a twin room (breakfast extra), but since their prices vary depending on the season you may pay more in Sept. You can email them directly at [email protected].

And while you're there, if you like Italian food, I highly recommend Bella Pasta just across the streey from the Ibis - best lasagna I ever had.

We stayed at the HOWARD on recommendation of friends in 1992. Great place. Lot of class and nice rooms. I doubt if it has changed. Close to the downtown area.

I've stayed a few times at the Dunstane Hotel enjoyed it, expecially when I was given the double room at the very top of the hotel. One of the single rooms was quite small, but clean, quiet, with good breakfasts and a pleasant staff. No elevator (sorry--"lift&quot and I think all the rooms are upstairs. It's probably a 10-15 minute walk to the Royal Mile but I always found plenty to see on the way. I heard many great things about the Castle View Guest House before I was there, but it was full--I think it would be worth checking out.

Castle View is a great place - but be aware the single is very small. The double/twin/family rooms are larger but the single is tiny.

It is worth it to me because the location can't be beat and the owners are very nice. But if space is important to you you might want to check out some of the other recommendations.

JimS-54 quid a night for a hotel just by the Grassmarket, views of the castle AND king size beds? That most certainly IS a deal in Edinburgh!

You might want to check out the Smooth Hound site (<b>http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/edinburg.html)</b> The first hotel listed, the Ben Doran, actually looks pretty good. But there are a lot to look through if that one doesn't suit.

Simply awesome - friendly!, comfortable, great location (bus stop right outside door), near the best Chinese (take-away) food I ever had (yes, I was surprised myself that the best Chinese food was in Scotland! ) ... the breakfast was INCREDIBLE!! You choose from a large menu that you get the night before

I can't say enough great things about this place!!!

As a single traveler myself, I stayed in room 7 (a small attic room) that was so charming and comfortable and had a great view. I shared a bathroom with room 8 ... but I didn't even know that. I thought it was my private bathroom. It was always so clean and was always available when I needed it.

The price is very inexpensive(the prices for every month is listed on their site)... You will LOVE it!!

I forgot to mention that you don't have to stay in a small room there ... I just chose to because it really fit my personality (it was really charming and cozy) ... they put teddy bears on your bed
