Anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably-priced hotel or B&B in Edinburgh? We are going in September and looking for something centrally located for sightseeing.

I would recommend "the Scotsman", its situated a few steps from the royal mile.

A friend just returned and recommended the New Mill Cottage B&B. I've booked two nights there in October.

It's about a 10 minute drive or convenient bus ride into the city.

Even by my standards the Scotsman is hardly reasonably priced

I have to agree with Sheila, I just checked the rates for the Scotsman using a random date for September, the cheaper rate was 200GBP booking directly with the hotel. I remember I paid a much lower rate when I visited that hotel. Maybe booking using some other mean would be cheaper, but is still far from reasonably. If you are willing to pay the extra cash you wont get disappointed tho.

I highly recommend 16 Lynedoch Place. Check this forum or trip advisor for reviews. We stayed and it was lovely.

I've stayed at the Hotel Ibis in Hunter Square twice and would recommend it esp. if you want to be centrally located. It is literally steps from the Royal Mile and most of the places of interest in town are within walking distance, as is the train station, tourist companies and most of the high-priced hotels that cost 4 times as much. At £50 per night for a twin/double room the Ibis is the best bargain in town. It's not fancy and breakfast costs extra, but you just can't beat that price at that location. It's only been open a few years so it's very modern and very clean, all rooms are ensuite, they have an elevator (lift) and a luggage room where you can leave your bags if you need to (no charge). However I'd make the decision and contact them for a reservation as soon as you can, such a great deal may get filled up and September is still in the tourist season. It's part of the Accor chain so if you look that up you'll find an email address for the Ibis.

The Scotsman which Diego13 mentioned looks lovely but like Sheila pointed out, it's not what you'd called "reasonably priced" by any means.

The Ibis's rates very considerably by season. In September a room is £70, not £50. The location is good -- just step out and you're on the Royal Mile -- but for less than that you could go to any one of a number of moderately priced B&Bs just a bit further out and get full breakfast and a more personal experience. Also, hopefully, a better bed, since I just stayed one night at the Ibis and slept on a hard platform bed with a pretty thin mattress. Depends upon what you want.

Bus services are extremely frequent along the major routes (e.g., to the Newington, Mayfield, and Prestonfield areas SE of the center -- you can easily be on Prince's Street in 15 minutes, including waiting time. Cost is 80p, or if you make your first journey after 9:30 am you can get a full-day pass for £2. But you don't get the glamor of being in the Old Town.

Hi. We stayed at the Castle View Guest House last September and loved it. It is on Castle St. just a few blocks from Princes st. and a block away from Rose St pubs & restaurants. We had the Balmoral Room -lovely view of the Castle. The breakfasts are excellent, the owner very pleasant. I would highly recommend it -only drawback is no elevator and you have to climb about 4 sets of stairs. The price is very good- under 100pds. The location can't be beat.
