There is frequent airport bus service. It is inexpensive and takes you right to the center of town.
Glasgow is a big exciting city - but a better use of your time would probably be a day trip to Stirling by train. The Castle is one of the best in Europe. You can also take a bus or train a short distance to Linlitlgow which has an amazing ruined palace that is worth at least a 2 or 3 hour visit. You can also catch organized tours from the tourist information center at Waverly Bridge (right at the train station). They offer many day trips to all parts of Scotland - even as far as Loch Ness or the Isle of Skye. You can wait until you are in Edinburgh and let the Tourist office advise which tours are best at that time.

Janis has given a couple of good suggestions especially as Linlithgow is not on the normal itinerary. But would suggest Glasgow as an easy day trip -45 minutes by very frequent train (and pass through L'gow). For countryside trips, I love the Borders especially Peebles - 40 minutes from Edinburgh by car. North Berwick has bracing walks along the coast and get there by suburban train. Airport - Get a bus into town from airport -cheap and easy. Bus passes the Callie, so driver may stop off for you if you are quick off the bus.

Easiest- Taxi. Cheapest- Bus. But I'd be surprised if the Cally doesn't do a pick up.
Email me and I'll send a couple of docs about Edinburgh you may find useful. Thin's (bookshop) does a couple of good very local guidebooks. Get a copy of The List when you arrive for current events.
Day trip to Glasgow is a good idea. Go by train- frequent cheap and reliable service. I have stuff on Glasgow too.
Go to the East Neuk of Fife- all the little fishing villages are gorgeous.
Especially if you're there for the 25th, try a Burn's supper for haggis, which is like spicy, lamby oatmeal. Don't listen to the miseryguts on this subject. Have a great time.
