Hi Tom, we are going in August to Edinburgh Festival and Tattoo, and I started making plans MANY months ago. I checked on a few other hotels recently, and most of the more know hotels and B&Bs were booked. Check the Edinburgh web site that John recommended, for more details... Judy

There are smaller towns nearby on the train line that you could probably book and then train in to the festival. This might be a very good plan if you don't like the congestion.

Kam is correct. Berwick-Upon-Tweed is an example. Go to www.google.com. and type it in. Loads of information.
John

when I went, 5 years ago - I literally drove into town and found a B&B which was a one mile walk into town.

true, I called about 15 places - but it is possible.

don't do it unless you are willing to possibly miss out though...

We are also going to the Festival. I got a few travel books and sent out a blitz of e-mails to hotels with web sites. Got turned down by quite a few but found a room for 3 nites at the Grosvenor Gardens Hotel in New Town. Rate is 110 (pounds) a nite with tax and full breakfast. Then I got lots of responses from other hotels with rooms - most were lots more expensive. I recommend this approach - its easier than calling and you'd be surprised to know that there are rooms available. I just hope the Grosvenor Gardens is a decent place - at first I was worried wondering why they had a vacancy when so many others were full. But now I see there are other vacancies as well. Good Luck!!
