Food for Thought on Neal Street in Covent Garden is a good veggie cafe - I've been going there for about 30 years and always try to fit in a lunch there when in London.

If we're talking anywhere in London, rather than in the immediate neighbourhood of the OP's flat, don't forget the Stockpot - a bit school dinners (we'll draw a veil over the tinned peas), but filling and relatively cheap:

annettetx: If you are truly talking student budget (as in stretching meager ¢/$/£ as far as possible) -- the suggestions in flanner's, nona1's and a couple of other posts will get you there. 2 for 1 and 50% off vouchers aren't in the same league since they will be 50% off £15 or £20 set meals. That's not student cheap. Pizza Express is absolutely fine -- but it definitely is not cheap.

But -- if you just mean they want to economize -- and are on sort of low-ish end typical American travel budgets -- then just about every thing mentioned above are options.

Just depends on how low the budgets actually are.
