Eating in Venice

Hi Gabe
If you do a search here on Venice restaurant you will find many suggestios from the past year.
Also a very handy pocketsized book called "Time for Food Venice" published by Thomas Cook has great suggestions, even places to have picnics.

You don't say if you have a price range in mind. At the very highest end, the restaurant of the Cipriani Hotel, and the restaurant Da Fiore, provided two of the best meals I've had in my life, and they charged accordingly.

At the moderate level ($40-60 pp)
I like Da Raffaele, Sempione, Ai Mercanti, several others

At the inexpensive level I like
Trattoria San Toma: they offer pizza, and more serious food as well.

I have a file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me

I recommend La Rivista in Dorsoduro area not far from Accademia bridge.

I went in March last year (2002).

This is what I wrote previously:

Author: Kavey ([email protected])
Date: 04/25/2002, 04:53 am
Message: Carolyn
There are many good restaurants in Venice which are not as expensive as the "top" ones often mentioned here.
I would recommend La Rivista which is in the Dorsoduro area, close to the Accademia Bridge, and part of the funky hotel Ca' Pisani.
The menu is not long but everything is wonderful, I loved the bread basket, particularly the rolls with olive chunks and the ones with walnut pieces. Our pastas were superb, one was a spaghetti with goose foie gras and cauliflower and the other a garganelli pasta with rabbit ragout and spring onion. Dessert was also superb. We didn't have starters, and had a beer and a soft drink and a bottle of water. The bill for 2 was under 50 Euros.
Kavey
Most of our favourites came from Shannon's restaurant list at www.slowtrav.com.

We like eating with the locals, and particularly enjoyed La Patatina, whose address I cannot remember, but is in her list. It's really not much more than a working men's cafe (visit at 11.30am and everything is set out - wine, bread, the lot, ready for the midday invasion).

For location, and especially if the weather is good, the Pizzeria at the bottom of the Accademia Bridge. If you're going in the evening, it shuts fairly early, as they open early for breakfast.

Probably the best meal we had, though still simple rather than flash, was at Trattoria Ca D'Oro. Get off the vaporetto at Ca D'Oro, walk up the alleyway to the main street (you have no choice about direction at this stage). Once you get to the main street go straight across it into another little alley and the trattoria is there. there was no written menu - the waitress just told us what she had and everything was excellent. Lots of locals stood at the bar to watch, good wine..........I want to be back there!

A couple of recommendations about booking. Everywhere is busy on Saturday night, so you need to book, and lots of places are closed on Sunday so again booking is a good idea.

Another vote for Alle Oche(although I think I remember it as Ae Oche). It's a student kind of place but a good relief from all the hustle and bustle.
We also liked our meal at Al Covo (pricey but good as opposed to pricey and pretty bad which we found alot in Venice). We had a great lunch our last day at Alla Madonna. Friends had recommended the book "Good Eats in Italy" which lists places in Rome, Florence and Venice. They swore by it. We found it hit and miss but I think you can find some more information on places you might want to check out with folks here in that book.
We ate at Gondoleri and were way underwhelmed! Frankly, our best meal was at Da Romana on Burano. The grilled shrimp were great. And, in closing, food was definitely not the high point in Venice (I wrote home to folks the food was "horrid"
but it almost doesn't matter..every other sense is so completely occupied and in a state of sheer delight. Have a good trip!

hi all, I am new here and want to thank Sue for recommending Slowtrav and my restaurant list. It is so easy to eat badly in Venice, but the traveller armed with good information can do very, very well in Venice.

If I can make one new recommendation for you to try, check out Boccadoro, a new restaurant in Campo Widman (Cannaregio.) There used to be a workingmans trattoria there - they actually gave me ketchup with my meat once - but the new owners have remodeled it and the food - virtually all seafood - is stellar and it is not at all expensive.

Anyway that is my tip for today. Ciao!
