I suggest taking a map and drawing a line with a ruler from Turkey to Spain. This will help you enormously in finding the most appropriate places to go without straying too much from the line. Regarding France, this obviously means that you should not stray far from the Mediterranean coast, although you will miss a huge number of things if you do not have a rental car.
