Dubrovnik--Sobe's

I am planning a trip to Croatia in late Sept. and would like to know if anyone has stayed in a Sobe--within the city or in the close in outskirts. Would like to keep the price between $80-$150 per night. I would want a double with a bathroom. Also---is there much difference in visiting in late September versus Mid October.
Thanks, Robin

You could very easily stay in an one bedroom apartment, if you choose carefully either in town or in the Pile or Ploce area.
There is no difference between September and October prices. We consider the season over on 01 November and many places close down for the winter. The word "sobe" means room and you may not always have a private bathroom. You should make sure to use a reliable company for your reservations, one which you can make your deposit on a credit card. Also do remember what you see on the internet may not be what you get upon arrival. Some apartment owners have never updated their websites and photos can be very old. Before moving to Dubrovnik I used the services of Dubrovnik apartment source. I found them to be very good and they advised me on the condition, location and just exactly it would take to walk into the old town. They have apartments for most budgets and have personally inspected each property.

We stayed in a sobe/one bedroom apartment, Villa Nicole, in Dubrovnik last September 18 - 21. Here's the link: http://www.dubrovnikapartmentsource....p?DASID=D02201. This agency was great to work with; I recommend them. Our aprtment was outside the Ploce gate, the quieter side of Dubrovnik. I would think in town could be very noisy. There were still cruise ships arriving that late in the season.

Our apartment was very nice and very modern, especially the bathroom. It is up some steep steps though you could take the road to lessen the ascent. But practically any place in Dubrovnik is going to be up some steps. The Villa Nicole is right on the main road into town from the south. It was easy to drop our bags, but we worried about the noise. But the road quieted down at night.

Assuming you want to travel beyond Dubrovnik, if only to make day trips, I think the schedule for day tours and transportation would offer less in October than in later September. Once you get out of the high season things slow down, and there's even less once you get past the shoulder season.

Dubrovniktravelady and Mimar have given you excellent advice. We used Dubrovnik Apartment Source last June and found it to be a great service. We are using them again this June 14-18…once again staying in Amelie Room. Amelie Room and Amelie Studio may better fit your budget of range $80-$150 per night. In fact Amelie Room is only $77 at the current rate of exchange. Here are the links.

Thank you for your information. Do you have a link for the apartment service that you worked with?

Whoops---now I see the different links. Thank you so much for all the info. The Amelie Room looks perfect and the price in certainly within our budget. I also loved the Villa Nicole but that is a bit high in price.

I have also been considering the Amelie Room. Jim21 - have you already stayed there or are you just considering it? If you have stayed there can you give more of a review. I see no mention of mini-fridge which is my only concern. Most rooms do seem to have them. Are there plenty of places near by to get inexpensive breakfasts/coffee?

Do note that you have to walk up many steps to get up there from old town. I prefer this because I like both the exercise and the view, but if you have any mobility issues take note.
It looks like the Amelie studio would have the kitchenette, not the room though. Lots of good cheap breakfast options--pastries and the like.

Hi Isabel,

Yes, we stayed there for 4 nights last June. The stay was a wonderful experience thanks to the owners, Bube (a Croatian nickname meaning small bug) and her mother Maria. Bube speaks English but Maria does not.

Our luggage never made our connecting flight from Dulles so Bube took control of that and worked with the appropriate people at the Dubrovnik airport to make sure it was delivered to our room the next day. We were a little bummed about not having luggage but Maria changed our mood when she took us up to the rooftop terrace overlooking the Old Town and brought us beer (really, really good Croatian beer and as much as we wanted) and about 10 different types of snacks…no charge.

Later in our stay we did some laundry in our sink and hung it on the clothes lines which are available on the roof. When we came back to our room that evening we found our clothes folded on our bed. That is the type of service you may expect to receive. I do not recall if there was a mini-fridge in the room. You may want to ask Dubrovnik Apartment Source. If not, I am sure Maria would allow you to keep a few things in her refrigerator. Her home shares a courtyard with Amelie Room and Amelie Studio and she seemed to be there 24/7.

As for breakfast…yes, there are some places close by. Amelie Room is actually in a small neighborhood directly above the Old Town. As you leave the building you can make a right and walk a little way up the hill. There you will find local restaurants and bakeries that serve that neighborhood. Or, you can walk down the 212 stairs (I counted them myself) to the Pile Gate where you will find all the restaurants and bakeries you will need to get a cappuccino and a breakfast role. The stairs are not that bad. They are scenic, tree lined and have landings. There are only about 3 or 4 more stairs to the room after that.

All in all, you cannot beat the service, location (unless you do not like walking that many stairs) or the price. That is why we are returning this June.

I hope I have answered your questions.
