Dubrovnik or Hvar on Easter

Would we be missing a special holiday in Dubrovnik if we take the ferry to Hvar on Easter morning? Would it be difficult to get last minute accommodations on a holiday? We wanted to be flexible on the last part of our trip and stay in small apartments or rooms, since we'll be staying in hotels the rest of the time. We're leaving next Sunday, so any help would certainly be appreciated.

Granny...

Last year, we left Croatia to hit Italy for Easter (and boy, that was a mess!)

I wish I could help you more, but I don't think I can compare since the pope was visiting last year around easter, so it was a different kettle of fish. Last minute lodging might be tough if there are a lot of vacationers around that time, so try to book in advance (but there did seem to be no shortage of room renters when I was there!) Otherwise, you might be OK. Oh, also make sure you get your ferry tickets in advance.

Enjoy Croatia. I miss it everyday.

Hi Crazymina,
Thanks for your reply. Right now I think we will probably leave Dubrovnik on that 9a.m. ferry to Hvar, and get our ferry tickets and a room/apartment in advance. I appreciate your advice on getting the ferry tickets early. Did you stay in Hvar and if so, where?

I stayed in Starigrad. It was a fluke...we arrived without any plans, and there was no bus to take us to Hvar town. However, the ferry master drove by and offered us a lift into Starigrad. When he found out we had no place to stay, he offered for us to check out the apartment in his home. It was an incredible place to stay...the equivalent of about 9 dollars a night per person (there were two of us) at the time. Full kitchen, living area, bedroom and bath, with a large patio overlooking the harbor. We just got really lucky!

But Hvar town is where most stay because it's so pretty. However, I would stay in Starigrad again!

Hey Granny and Mina! We spent last Easter in Dubrovnik and Easter Sunday really wasn't any different from the day before or after and seemed pretty much like an ordinary Sunday.

Hi Crazymina and Peep,
I'm glad to hear we won't be missing anything special if we leave Easter morning for Hvar. Found a room or apartment, both available, on the net and owner said it was 10 minute walk to the Hvar center, but I'm guessing more like 30 since he offered to pick us up in his boat at the harbor. This part of our trip will be an adventure. Have either of you been to Trogir? We think we would like to stay there one night before going back to Split for the bus back to Dubrovnik.
