Dubrovnik Hotels/ Excelsior or Hilton
Having never been to Dubrovnik, but going in August (unfortunately thats when business calls in Zagreb and I'm adding four days in order to see Dubrovnik with a friend) and aware of the crowds, is either the Excelsior or the Hilton a better choice? I will be touring and have booked a driver to take us to Montenegro one day and into wine country on another day, but am stuck on which hotel to choose. I'd like the beach of the Excelsior, but considering the summer crowds of which I have read the Hilton may seem like a more welcome oasis. Please let me know if you have insight. Form reading these boards it would seem that tcreath would be the one to opine. I can't change the fact that I'm going in August, but I'd like to make it as palatable as possible. Many thanks...-Michael

Can't tell you anything about the Excelsior.
Stayed for 3 nights at the Hilton.
Beautiful property. Got a room at the Executive level. Access to the wonderful Executive Lounge with nice free food spread throughout the day and free booze in the evening. The room was HUGE and very nice, with a balcony overlooking the Old Town and water view. Wonderful staff.
Just couple of minutes walk to the walled in portion of city.
I would not hesitate to stay there again.

I've never stayed at either, so I am especially unqualified.
However, I stayed in a sobe just a few yards up and to the left of the Hilton and thus walked by it every time I went "home." I walked in to have a look and must say that I was impressed.
It seems well-managed and maintained and it is well-located, especially if you plan on outings outside the walls of the Old Town. It has its own trafic circle out front that makes driving to and from the hotel easy. (IT also has its own gargage.)
It is not well-situated as far a beaches are concerned. But given how hot Dubrovnik was when I was there last week, I'm not sure a beach is where I'd want to be in August. I'd probably want to be by the beautiful pool at the Hilton.

We stayed in the Excelsior.
The room was very small but the hotel was good with a decent breakfast. We enjoyed sitting out on the terrace with our drinks at night overlooking the sea.
so the views from the Excelsior would make me go back!

I stayed at the Excelsior - 2001 ? 2002. Room with a terrace - perfect view of the Old town. The room was small and a bit functional but when I opened the doors to the terrace I was really glad I stayed there - even as the dollar was shrinking. I had breakfast on my terrace every morning - it's literally a 5 minute walk to Stradun - and the rustic restaurant was great.I now prices have increased considerably but that view is wonderful.

The Hilton is quite nice and very very close to the old city. We used the club option a lot as it was quite hot when we visited in June and the entire family seemed to spend much of our time resting and drinking cold beverage. The pool at the Hilton is actually somewhat indoors.

We just returned from Croatia. We stayed in the Villa Argentina and loved it. The Excelsior is just down the street from the Argentina toward the old town. We didn't like the area of the Hilton. It was very hectic and commercial while on the other side of DBV at the Excelsior and Argentina it was very relaxing and much nicer.
DBV is great,,,enjoy!
