We are two female budget travelers arriving in Dubrovnik Sept 6 and staying until Sept 21. We plan to travel around the area. We are in shock at the price of accommodations. We'd like to book a place to stay the first couple of nights until we figure out what we want to do or find very low cost accommodations. Does anyone have any ideas or can make recommendations? I have exhausted the web. Please help. We might be sleeping in the streets. Thank you, Margarita

I strongly suggest that you contact Michelle and Andrew, owners of www.dubrovnikapartmentsource.com. If there is any space left, they will know about it. They are a young American couple who personally inspect all their properties and can find something which might fit your budget. I used their services prior to moving here and it was so much better than trying to find something by searching the internet. You will find that Dubrovnik is the most expensive town on the Dalmatian coast, so perhaps something out of this area might be a better choice.

thank you for your input.....I visited the site you recommended and now I know we will be sleeping on the streets. Anyone out there have any ideas? We only want to stay in Dubrovnik for 2-3 days and move on to places that offer more affordable accommodations.

What do you consider budget? Hard to make suggestions without some input.

If you want to wing it, we have had good luck staying in sobes; rooms in private homes. Have always found them immaculate and inexpensive. When you get off a bus or ferry, there are usually a crowd of older women with signs saying "sobe" or "room". They will tell you a price, and lead you to the room (ALWAYS up a hundred stairs, IME!) If you don't like it, you don't pay. An alternative is to go to the tourist office. They often have rooms to which they can refer you.

You will love Croatia, and Dubrovnik!

Hvala, Hvala,....thanks for your suggestions. We are now exploring Sobes. Our budget is $100/day per person. I've sent off inquiries and now waiting for replies. Looking forward to the waving signs of prospective private room rentals. Only 2 more weeks to go.

Hi Margarita, I have been looking for budget apartments in Dubrovnik for the same time period and I have found several in the 70 euro range, which I think is about $100. If for two people that should work for you. I used tripadvisor and then the website: http://www.dubrovnik-online.com/apartments. Originally, I was going to look for a sobe on arrival as described above but decided to see what was available online. Good luck and I'm sure you will find something.

You might try Hotel Petka, across from the ferry terminal. It was a godsend for us a few years ago as we were stranded at 11:00 pm, when the ferry to Bari was abruptly cancelled. I spotted the Petka across the street and remembered I had stayed there once during Tito days in the 70's. Served us well, we re-rented our car next morning just a few doors away, drove to Split and flew to Rome. It certainly has been pleasantly renovated since the the old days...and is perfectly acceptable...it's a short bus ride from the Old city. Th rate at the time was about $100+.

Virtualgirl, are you planning on going to Trogir? If so, I can dig up the name of an apartment we stayed at this spring for 43E per night. It was in the center of town and a perfect place for two...with a balcony area also. Unfortunately, the name isn't as memorable for me as the price and I don't want to hunt for it if you aren't planning on going to the area, or if even that is too expensive.

We are two senior ladies, also budget travelers, and just returned Monday from Croatia. We stayed at the Villa Amfora, just a block away from the Hotel Petka mentioned above. We had room 3, w/twin beds, mini refrig, a/c, bath w/shower. We paid 44 e./nt. It wasn't fancy but it was clean, safe, and had good a/c (which we needed).

We loved the location, the bus stop into town was about 1/2 block away, there were plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, internet places nearby . . . we were very happy we had not stayed in town.

Breakfast was not not included, but they had a kitchen we could use and coffee/teas were provided and we had a big balcony to sit on right off the kitchen. Their email address is [email protected].

We also went to Trogir, Split, Zadar, and Zagreb . . . we did not find prices cheaper than Dubrovnik. I kept telling my friend that DBV would be our most expensive place but as we went along, the prices were the same or higher.

We had a great trip and hope you do too.

Thank you for all your replies and help. Sandy, thanks for the info. I'm surprised to discover the prices for accommodations in Dubrovnik are the best value. I was hoping it would be the reverse. We are staying 3 nights at Ragusa B&B in the old town for 50E/night. After that we will find another spot. We have 2 weeks to spend in Croatia and our adventure begins in Dubrovnik. Not sure how far we will get or where to go. Did everyone enjoy Split? Thank you again.

Have you considered staying in Cavtat? You can get to Dubrovnik via a frequent 30 minute boat ride.
Also, will you have a car?

We stayed at Edis Seaview Rooms . its just outside the Pile Gate/ no Steps except in the house. Edi speaks English & is very helpful with maps & sugestions! the rooms are clean % comfortable ,well worth the extra for the seaview.Eu 65per room, we booked it through www.hostels.com ,you can also book direct.at [email protected] We also stayed in Trogir at apartmenti Trogir which was very good & close to the town.We rode on the bus from Dubrovnik to Trogir. it took 4 1/2 hours but very scenic.

Don't worry too much, as Dbv will be the most expensive place you stay (but probably also has more hostels than the typical Croatian town). You can book a room from a person directly (they'll find you), or you can go straight to a tourist office (they might even have one at the airport now) and book a private room through the office. I feel you get a little more quality control that way. What I love about traveling in Croatia is the accommodations system--I'd rather stay in an apartment built on someone's second floor that a hotel any day. As you move from town to town, you will likely meet fellow travelers who can recommend places to you. I've moved on to renting larger apartments in advance, so I cannot recommend any specifics, but I did want to reassure you.

thankyou everyone for your advice. We have returned from our trip. Yes, Dubrovnik was the most expensive when it came to lodging. We stayed at sobre's and our rooms ranged from $60-80/night. some with private bathroom and others without. Our best place was on the island of Lopud. $40/night right on the esplanade with view of sea. We had a fabulous time but we did run out of money. Was shocked at how expensive the area was. Thanks again for advice.

I'm shocked that you are shocked. What are you comparing prices against? $60 to $80 per night are bargain rates in most of the Western world, IME. Where have you vacationed that was so much cheaper?
