Hi jk,
>Rent a car, drive to Naples - another couple of days - drive to Florence ...<
Highly contraindicated.
You absolutely do not want to drive in Naples.
The only parts of your trip that you might want a car is if you are planning a drive through Tuscany or around the Lakes.
You are required to have an IDP in Italy.

Just returned from Naples visit and yes most would not want to drive there.
Oddly enough they have a bus/taxi lane on the main seafront road and so many regular cars were using the bus only lane that buses would have been better off using the normal traffic lanes. That's Naples and Italian approach to traffic laws.

PalenQ, could you recommend any hotels in Naples? which part of Naples would be a good location? I really don't know much about Naples and the surrounding sites but what would you recommend? I heard that the Blue Grotto is nice. Can this be done as a day trip?
Thanks.
J
