Hello knowledgeable travelers! My family is currently living in Switzerland along Lake Geneva and we have a wedding at the end of August in the Dordogne region of France. We have booked our accommodations in Riberac and thought it would be a fun idea to break up the 8 hour drive over two days, with stops that would interest our kids (ages 9, 6.5 and 5.5 yo). It would be great to see interesting sights, but since we are now living in Switzerland we don't feel like we have to do 'everything' in a short trip - we can always return if we want to explore a region further. We thought that we should do a short stop in Lyon because it would likely be a good first fuel/ bio break. I haven't even begun to think about what we would see in a short time in Lyon (we have never been to Lyon but love visiting Annecy). After that we weren't sure what towns might be interesting, but aimed to get to near Saint-Ours, where we heard of a popular amusement park for kids called Volcania. After spending the following day at the amusement park, we thought we could drive another hour or so to get closer to Riberac. We enjoy hiking (at an easy level), swimming, parks geared towards families, castles and anything that most kids ages 5-9 think is fun.... We won't be doing wine tours with the kids on this trip and would likely prefer to pass on activities that would be pretty much the same if we did them in Switzerland. Touristy places are fine - let's face it, we are tourists on this trip. We don't speak French really beyond a basic level, so that limits are ability to really be like locals in a provincial French town
We have a moderate budget and are pretty easy going on accommodations (hotels, motels, inns, B&Bs are fine), except we generally stay away from hostels (need a private bathroom) and no rustic camping. I feel like I am randomly picking out a cute town or village from the map, so would very much appreciate any advice on cool sights to see, charming towns to visit or good places to stay as 'stop overs'. Lyon, as a large city, would not be good for a short stop unless you know exactly where you want to eat. Pick a smaller town for your stop; maybe Pérouges.

Any overnight between Clermond-Ferrant and Tulle, or these locales, would do.
