Another pass worth mentioning 20 miles or so south of Kenmare is the Healy Pass.It is the same height-1300 feet. Worth driving both directions. There is a small shop right at the top.The road is better and there is less traffic than in the Conor Pass.If you have time drive the whole length of the Beara Peninsula and Mizen Head Peninsula.See pictures of both passes on www.dingle-region.com/pass.htm and www.picturesdirect.com/fa112.htm

If you have driven from Carmel to Big Sur on HWY 1 in California, then driving Conor pass will be no problem.
Having driven both Conor Pass and Healy Pass last year, I personally thought Healy Pass was the more beautiful.
I posted some photos of the two passes here if anyone is interested.

Tony, again I thank you. I guess I'm naive at times but I don't get the political byplay at TripAdvisor. That aside, as we'll be driving from Ennis to Dingle, we'll be heading in the "right" direction. With the caveat that the views aren't all that great if the weather is marginal, my take is that we should be right taking the road on a nice day.

Sure the TA Ireland forum is a great resource, I do agree that some of the review writing holier than thee folk can be a pain, and I am quite often on the receiving end. If I had posted that reply on Frommers forum I would have had it removed and another nasty email because you are not allowed to mention the competition let alone post a link to them.
The only real problem I find with this forum is the lack of an edit button and on the occasion that patriotism gets the better of my brain then I have to ask for my post to be removed which takes time and, guilty as charged can cause offence.
