Driving Portree to Glasgow

My sister, brother-in-law and I will be leaving our rental in Portree and driving to Glasgow Airport to catch a 3:30 p.m. flight back to Philadelphia, probably on August 15 or 16. Since this trip will take place during the "high tourist season," how long can I expect the trip to take? My BIL is fine with driving four-plus hours, being in the airport for two hours and then sitting on the plane for seven hours. I'm not so keen on the idea and wouldn't mind if we drove to within an hour of the airport the day before our flight and stay at a B&B. Any suggestions?

At least 5 hours.

That makes the most sense...

I personally would not attempt it on an August weekend. LOTS of caravans (travel trailers/motor homes) and coaches will be on the roads, and since almost none are 4 lane so it could be a very long drive indeed.

I'd drive at least as far as the Trossachs the evening prior.

Thanks! You've both reinforced my belief that driving from Portree to Glasgow the day of the flight is not the best idea.

Last week I had already contacted the Riverside Guest House in Crianlarich (www.riversideguesthouse.co.uk/)and suggested to my sister that we stay there (or somewhere in the same vicinity) the night before our flight. I think I can be my usual charming self and talk them into this!

Since your flight is in the afternoon, Crianlarich would be a could stopover. But don't dawdle - the A82 along Loch Lomond could be quite busy.

If it were me, I'd be down the other end of the Loch.

Sheila,

Do you have any specific suggestions that I could check out? B&B's, for instance? Thanks!

Because of the different suggestions, I am now looking at the Eastbank B&B in Helensburgh for a one-night's stay before we fly out of Glasgow. Any opinions on Helensburgh in general or Eastbank in particular?

Thanks!

That would be a fine location - and if you get there before closing time you should definitely visit the Hill House. A real masterpiece by Charles Rennie Mackintosh
