Laurie - if you can't pick up the car until 8AM, you might want to think about picking it up the night before. I know 8 sounds early - but by the time you get all the paperwork sorted out and learn the features of the car etc it will likely be close to 9AM - and that is a pretty late start for your Cotswold trip.

if you can pick it up Sat evening you could get on the road by 7AM and be into the Cotswolds villages by 9ish. Just in time for a morning coffee/tea break and some sightseeing before the daytripper buses start overrunning Bibury and Bourton on the Water.

This thread has been fun to watch developing. We seem to have wrung out any joy of discovery or sense of adventure by turning it into a paint-by-numbers tour of other people's favourites, leaving at the crack of dawn, while attempting to avoid the dreaded tour coaches.

Laurie, can I suggest you attempt to turn this into something that you want to do rather than what others have done? Do some research and pick something that you want to see, be it Sudely Castle or Berkely Castle (to go slightly outside the Cotswolds) or Chedworth Roman Villa or Painswick Rococco Gardens or Snowshill Manor or some of the great churches like North Leach or Winchcombe or Cirencester, and then just drive aimlessly on the backroads and discover villages untouched by tour buses and tacky souvenir shoppes.

Well, Burford is a bit out of the way but is absolutely charming, with several very good restaurants/pubs for lunch, and beautiful scenery. It's also convenient to Woodstock and Bleinheim.

Thank you so much for all your replies to my question! We are really looking forward to this trip. Just 2 plus weeks and counting. I have taken many notes from the valuable information here. Thanks again! Laurie
