Driving in Italy

We are driving from Rome to Padula, Italy, on to Agripoli, then to Almalfi Coast ending in Sorrento. We are planning to return the car in Sorrento. We are now thinking we might like to keep the car and drive to Naples then on to Rome.....I feel uncomfortable about driving in Naples. Can anyone give us advice or information on a place to safely park on the outskirts of Naples so we can visit the museum there, then return to the car and drive on to Rome...... or should we just do as we orignially planned, turn the car in and take the train from Sorrento to Naples, then the train from Naples to Rome?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi b,

>I feel uncomfortable about driving in Naples.<

As well you should.

Calculate the cost of keeping the car in Sorrento and Naples plus parking plus gas and compare that to having a limo take you to the Naples train station (about 110E).

www.viamichelin.com will give you estimated costs for fuel and tolls.

For private limo transfers, we were pleased with Limousine Service Sorrento (Renato Cuomo)
www.cuomonet.it and Francesco. http://www.francescomarrapese.com/

Enjoy your visit.

We have rented cars in many European countries even England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland - driving on the "wrong" side of the road - but we refuse to drive in Italy. So no help from me. Listen to ira and bob - they are very experienced and I would believe what they say.

Outside of the cities is easy driving. Leave the car in Sorrento and take the train the rest of the way.

I agree with dropping the car in Sorrento and contacting a driver to take you to Naples museum/train station. We used Francesco (Ira's suggestion) and it was wonderful and are planning on going back and using his services again.

I once made the drive from Rome to Sorrento, and didn't think it was bad at all.

However, when I rented the car in Rome, I spoke Italian to the man at the desk. He made some chit-chat and asked where I was going. When I mentioned Sorrento, he got a grim look on his face and said, "You're not stopping in Naples, right?"
