Driving in Ireland

I'm going to Ireland in May. I will be driving form Dun Loaghaire to Clifden, from Clifden to Bantry and Bantry to Rosslare. I'm used to twisting, narrow roads, but I'd like to get an idea how much driving time is involved. Could someone help me?

There are narrow twisting roads and then there are Irish roads. The main highways are easy, once off them you have to be prepared to brush the hedgerows to avoid head on collisions. Just leave twice as much time as you think you need. We found it was best to keep to the shore roads whenever possible. The scenery in Ireland is nearly invisible from interior roads because of the hedgerows.

We spent 17 days in Ireland last October. Driving is truly an experience. If you plan on a 30 miles per hour average you should be just fine. Take it as an opportunity to view the fourty shades of green. Yes, driving is slow. We were told very often, "Don't worry about it chap. Just enjoy the beauty as you travel down the road." <BR>

Thanks Sydney and Alan. I drove through Wales a few years ago and definitely found it to be a challenge. Ireland sounds very much like rural Wales. I hope that I can navigate my way through OK. Also, I will make sure to take my time and enjoy the view. Thanks again.

I drove around Ireland ten years ago and found the lesser roads very potholed and no warnings of sharp turns, etc., so I would advise exercising caution when driving off the main highways. The signposting in Ireland is unreliable but you'll eventually get to where you want to be!

I would have to agree Sydney's message about driving in Ireland. I have been there approx 8 times throughout my life and there's nothing like it. As a child, I would get car sick in Ireland from the narrow winding roads and I never had that problem here. It's a beautiful country and worth the trip but be prepared for a long and bumpy ride!! Don't miss Wexford when you head to Rosslare!! Have a great trip.

Thank you all for your help. I've been a little concerned about driving in Ireland. It sounds a little like driving in rural Wales and Cornwall, except for the potholes.
