driving holiday in france

Hi All. We will be driving in France in july & august starting at Roscoff. So far we have planned three nights in Quimper three nights in Les Sable D'olonne & two weeks in La Rochelle. La Rochelle is intended as a base for daily trips to places of interest.
We love medieval town but would appreciate any advice on what to see & do.
After La Rochelle we are open to suggestion, we could move a little further south for a few days or work our way back to the ferry by a different route (obviously). All help &advice greatly appreciated as we are totally new to this type of holiday & of course want to get the very best from it.
Thanks in anticipation ! Anniemay

Anniemay: Unfortunately your message is tagged Ireland, not France, so not very many people are likely to see it? Not sure if you can change tag; maybe you need to re-post?

La Rochelle is beautiful! Are you looking for a hotel or are you already set up in that city?

From La Rochelle, we continued to Cognac--does that hold any interest?

Click on my name and you will find my Trip Report: Basel, Jura, Dordogne, La Rochelle, Paris. Obviously, only the La Rochelle section would be of interest with your present itinerary configuration.

Are you traveling with a motor home or do you plan to stay in hotels, B&Bs and gites, the latter particularly for the extended stay near La Rochelle. If the latter, you might want to take a look at Gite de France: http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/bed_breakfasts

From La Rochelle you cross one of the most beautiful bridges that takes you to the Ile de Re.

We are staying in an apartment in La Rochelle (park Frank Delmas)Read a little on the net about Niort, has anyone been there? I will read up on Ile De Re & certainly pay a visit. What a traveller you are Michael. Until now our holidays were two weeks around Italy which we love.I have voluntarily taken care of my grandchildren every day til they started school at five years from the first one twenty three years ago to the eight & last ? who is one year old. A wonderful though hectic experience I would not have missed .Now this year we have six long weeks alone in France & so looking forward to it. Want to make the most of it & see as much as possible

If you have six weeks in France and are basing 2 weeks in La Rochelle, you'll want to visit the Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oléron, Niort, Saintes, and inland around the Cognac area. Then you should absolutely plan at least 10 days in the Dordogne, traveling down to the area through Angoulème and Périgueux, with a side trip over to Oradour-sur-Glane on the way. Base yourselves around Sarlat, preferably with a 30-mile radius to the north, east, or south, and revel in the stunning offerings of the Périgord Noir.

Driving in Frnace would be great but what about the driving laws / rules and insurance? Can you arrange it before you go?

What ABOUT "driving laws/rules and insurance?" All you do is rent a car,pay the CDW (or not, if your cc covers it), and off you go. Gazillions of people do it every day. Of course you arrange it before you go; otherwise you pay an arm and a leg.

Thanks, Michael. I may have an alternate career in the works.

"All you do is rent a car"

If you're starting off at Roscoff, chances are you're driving the car you put on the ferry at Plymouth or Rosslare. Your own insurance certificate gives you coverage throughout civilised Europe. Nothing to arrange - except for remembering to put the certificate and the registration doc into the glove compartment.

But make sure you've checked the AA site for whatever new gadgets the French want you to have in the car.

Oh, good point, Flanner. I missed that. But still, it's easy.
