driving from Geneva to Nice

We have a day and a half to drive from Geneva airport to a family occasion in Nice in September. Any suggestions of the nicest route or interesting things to see on the way?

just to continue this...after Nice we will have another 4 full days to get back to Geneva airport. SO what I really need are ideas for a round-trip route to get the best out of the area. thanks.

You can drive the Route des Grandes Alpes - a gorgeous mountain round with spectacular scenery. It takes at least two full days.

Thanks traveller 1959. I just looked at the Route des Grandes Alpes web site and it appears that 2 days will be very tight. I could do it on the way back over 3-4 days. Has anyone done this route and can recommend a minimum for a comfortable drive?

I've driven most of this route and, until now, didn't know there is a formal name to it. Yes, two days would be right if you stuck to the route shown on the website.

However, there are a number of side trips as options on your 3-4 day return.

St-Véran (Queyras) - the highest village in the Alps.

Lake Annecy and the scenic town of Annecy.

The lakeside town of Yvoire.

And of course, Chamonix and Mont Blanc.

thanks for the replies. Regarding accommodation...we will be doing the route from 21-24 SEPTEMEBER and have been told it is still advisable to prebook accommodation. I amm not sure I want to tie myself down to exactly how much we will drive each day. Do others also think I must pre-book on this alpine route?

I agree - stay loose. I don't think you'll have a problem finding a place to spend the night...
