Driving distances

Four of us are leaving for 3 weeks in Italy, renting a wagon to visit Umbria, Tuscany, Cingue Terra, Lake Como. Does anyone know of a good web site to calculate distances and best routes?

The web site will be OK for distances and routes, but you should get a good highway map or atlas and study the areas and roads where you plan to go. As for "best routes," those could be the fastest routes to some people and the more scenic, slower routes to others. You haven't said whether you will drive from specific points to other points, but I always limit my drives to a maximum of about 250 miles (about 400 km) so I can have a little time to stop along the way. If I can arrange it, I keep the drives to 200 miles or less per day. In 3 weeks you will have plenty of time to visit the areas you named and still not drive over any excessive distances.

There's no doubt that if your primary goal is to get from one spot to another, and if you happen to have mostly autostrada available to do it, you can stretch your drives to as much as you wish. Covering distances of 500 to 600 miles in a day's drive isn't out of the question, but it rather eliminates any random sightseeing along the way. One of the major advantages of having a car is the flexibility to go and stop wherever and whenever you want; you lose that flexibility if you plan only long drives. Good luck.

While I agree that you need a good map, I think that the best maps are the ones you buy there.
