Heathrow to Gatwick with overnite

I seldom ask questions here but I do need help on this one. We are arriving from Rome into Heathrow in the evening and must then get to near Gatwick for a flight the next morning. So, two questions:
1. The best transport between airports
2. The best place to spend the nite close to the airport--preferably with courtesy shuttle and reasonable.

Hi Bob,

I am honored to be able to contribute my small bit to making your trip successful.

Item 2. We stayed at the Gatwick Belmont House in Horley. They provide basic, clean accomodations, a full English Breakfast (Buffet yet!) and transport to the airport.

Probably the best transport between Heathkrow and Gatwick is Speedlink. BAholidays.com has lots of hotels to choose from at or near Gatwick.

How early is your flight out? If it is very early I'd take SpeedLink and stay at an airport hotel at LGW. Speedlink is easy, cheap and the fastest way to make the transfer.

BUT - if your flight out is 9 AM or later I would probably go into London and stay at a hotel near Victoria (there is a Holiday Inn just outside the station doors). This would give you an evening in London to have a nice dinner, go to a show, or just walk along the river. Then take the Gatwick Express from Victoria - leaves every 15 minutes and takes 35 minutes right to the terminal.

Thanks to all--that will give me a good start. In 22 trips to Europe, have not been to London since my first--in 1961.

Hi, I'm doing the reverse (Gatwick to Heathrow) in October and it seems that Speedlink and Flightlink and Jetlink have been consolidated to one system.
I found this through the Gatwick airport webpage:

http://www.baa.com/main/airports/gat...ere_frame.html
and the bus site is:

http://www.nationalexpress.com/neh.cfm

I hope this helps.
