Drive to Bilbao from Bayonne

Planning todrive from Bayonne, France to Bilboa for sole purpose of seeing Gugenheim. Any idea of how long this drive over the Pyrennes will take? This is a side trip from our main driving tour of France.

John,
There's a major throughway from Bayonne to Bilbao on which you can cover the 90 miles or so in about an hour and a half. You're not going to encounter alpine-like mountain passes enroute; the scenery is lushly impressive nevertheless.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like an easy drive. Any comments on the Guggenheim?

Hi, John.
It is a very easy route. In fact, I think you could do it in a day (although I think the spanish Basque Country deserves a bit more time...)
Bear into mind that we are talking toll roads, and they are expensive, specially in the spanish side.
About the Guggenheim, the "Degas to Picasso" exhibition has just opened...
More later

there are 150 km from Baiona to Bilbo, using the motorway (quite expensive anyway, 20,5 FF to the border, and from there to Bilbo nearly 1,500 PTAS). Can be made in one hour and half or two, more than three without taking the motorway.
Get the third way out anyway! Not Bilbao-East nor Centre, but West (oeste/mendebalde in Spanish and Basque in the signals). Myself I'm from Bilbao and to tell you the truth, you won't find almost anything inside that can be compared with the building itself. Anyway, there are some good collections. Also worth a visit the Fine Arts Museum, quite near from the Guggenheim, and the Basque Museum, at the heart or the "Seven Streets" or Old City.

I believe the Guggenheim is closed on Mondays. Someone on a different travel board wrote that she had but one day to visit, and of course it was a Monday!
Carol L
