Drive or train Rome to Nice?

I am flying to Rome in 2 weeks with a friend and our 2 teenagers. We will have 4 days in Rome and plan to go to Pompei for a day. We are then going to Nice, to a timeshare for a week. If we take the train from Rome would we see much from the train? We could stop and possibly spend the night along the way. Or would driving be better? We could also fly on Virgin Air - but flight goes to Brussels then back to Nice. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi marilee,

I think I recall some posters saying that you can't go directly to Nice by train due to work on the rails.

I suggest you do a text search.

With 4 people I would drive and stop in Santa Margherita[Portofino] for the nite to break it up.

I am not sure but that engineering work Ira references may have been completed by now. Also be aware that the amount of scenery will vary depending on the ROUTE you take to Nice..one way is to go through Bologna and Milan; the other is to go through Genoa (the so-called "coast route&quot and the latter may prove to be more scenic and it can take 9+ hours to do. Some of the Genoa connections from Rome leave from the Ostiense station vs. Termini.
Regardless, I think taking a the train would be more scenic for EVERYONE since nobody has to watch the road/navigate/fight with the kids in the back etc., etc. Enjoy your trip

The coastal route by train is very scenic and you have one of the best views ever of Cinque Terre. Nothing prevents you from breaking up the trip in 2 days either as you would do with the car. Genova is excellent for passing an afternoon-evening, or any other seaside town just south or west of Genova on the major train connection.
Sounds a bit weird to fly from Rome to Brussels and then back to Nice...
