Hi, yes I believe I can. When you leave Rome take main road that goes west to Fiumicino. Than turn left (south) and keep on the road with the sea on your right of course. You will no doubt see signs indicating Anzio.
Just keep driving on this road. You will go Terracina and eventuall Naples (Napoli). Just stay on the coastline road.
You will than drive to Sorrento, and about the time you arrive at Masa Lubrense the road will turn east, still on the coast line and than you will be at Amalfi.
Danbenet, this is the scenic route, not the fastest of course. It is a beautiful drive but if anyone in the auto has a fear of heights etc. it might be nerveracking for them. And whoever is driving (assume it will be you) does need to know that the drive to Amalfi is considered by some to be hair raising. Don't think I would want to be the driver personally but my husband never had a problem. But than he drove in Rome, Naples etc. without a problem.
May I suggest that when you are in Rome that you go to a bookstore and buy a good driving map. This will be a big help of course and prepare you for the road ahead. I cannot remember the road numbers which you might want to have. Also am sure your hotel can give you good directions on how to get out of Rome if you need that.
Wishing you a safe and beautiful drive.

Hi Danny, bear with me today. I am half asleep. A friend called from Italy and woke me in the early morning (she got her time differences mixed up) and so not quite with it.
Have read you last post twice but not sure if I am exactly clear on what you mean (this is because of my mind today not your post).
Am I understanding you correctly that you want to not go along the coast from Rome? That you want to take an inland route, bypass Naples and than go to Amalfi?
Please post again to let me know if I understood your question correctly. In meantime I will put on my thinking hat because I know I have done this in reverse (going south to north). I will get back to your thread later to check on your response.

Spent a week driving the Amalfi Coast and nearby inland
backroads two years ago. If you enjoy driving, you will greatly enjoy the coastal
road and its challenges. Be sure to get a small car--parking is precious. A
standard transmission is the best (and much less expensive) way to enjoy
driving the coast; again, IF you enjoy driving. For humor and insight on driving the amalfi coast, do text search on"rules for driving the amalfi coast".
To get to the Coast, you have two choices: The Autostrada (A1 from Rome and
A3 around Naples) to SS145 toward the Coast; look for the shortcut to Positano
in Meta. This is the quickest by far--about 3 hours from Rome driving at 85-90
mph. there is no speed limit on the Autostrada, and you will be passed a lot at
this speed. But for the scenic route, cut to the coast south of Terracina (SS82
off of A1) and wind along the coast to A3 around Naples to Meta. This will take
much longer; at least twice as long as the Autostrada.
There is no point in driving directly to the coast out of Rome; the area from
Ostia (on the coast just SW of Rome) to Terracina is highly developed, and
buildings block most of the view of the beach.
Enjoy.

Hi,
We're going to be staying in Maiori on the Amalfi coast for a week and will be driving in from Rome.
I've read the posts here, but I'm wondering about the route suggested by Mapquest, which takes you A1 to A3 all the way to Vietri sul Mare (on the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast), and then just 9 miles (westward) on the Amalfi Drive to Maiori.
Our villa agent had suggested driving to Castellamare di Stabia and then through Positano, etc eastward on a 20+ mile stretch of the Drive.
To me this seems silly - we want to get there the quickest way as we'll have plenty of time all week for scenic.
Thoughts?
Thanks very much

Get off in Angri, it is better, you won't find any traffic, via the Valico di Chiunzi. Check this website: www.viamichelin.com

Thanks, SeaUrchin and Positano!
Positano,
Have you taken the road from Angri to Maiori? How is it? Paved, I hope? Will we destroy our rental cars on it ??!!
Is it more dangerous than the coastal road?
I only ask all this because there will be 4 cars of us caravaning with kids and older people.
Thanks much for any thoughts,
