The drive to Dublin to Galway would take more than a morning or an afternoon - one way. Although the roads are "Ireland Style" two laners, you will not make the mileage that you would expect. Remember, travel in Ireland is almost double that of the states. Not that it is not fun (it is), it just takes longer so relax and enjoy it. Two hundred miles in the states would take about 3 to 4 hours, depending on the weight of your foot and your luck. In Ireland, you are looking at six (or plus) hours, especially if you are not used to driving on the left side of the road from the right side of the car. Also, few highways in Ireland by-pass towns.

I just did it. 3 1/2 to 4 hours. And, I am not used to driving on the left. And I agree about the traffic. It all depends on how many farmers are on the road with their tractors. I can't tell you how many poop spreaders I followed.
The traffic on N72 moves right along. Then you see "TRAFFIC CALMING" and you are comming to a town. The highways don't by-pass.
Don't be afraid to do it. We drove all the way out to the end of Connemara and stayed at Clifden, Abbyglenn Castle. It was the nicest place we stayed on our entire trip and it didn't cost all that much. Wonderful people.
Have a great trip.
Dave

I did the drive from Galway to Dublin, very reasonable drive. We left Galway in the morning and had lunch in Dublin. Traffic wasn't bad until you get to Dublin (so you'll have the opposite). Dublin traffic is pretty bad these days I hear.

The roads were good on that route.
