Dress code for Vatican

My husband is wondering if long cargo shorts (that fall just below the knee) are acceptable for men (to enter the Vatican museums and St. Peter's). Otherwise, he'll make sure to bring one pair of slacks.

I also read that women can get aware wearing capris. Has anyone found that to be accurate or should I pack a pair of slacks or a long skirt. I have knee-length skirts I'm bringing as well. I'm planning on bringing a wrap to throw around my shoulders for the Vatican and other churches since I'm bringing sleeveless dresses and shirts.

the rule is no knees, no shoulders.

capris should be ok [male or female versions] but shorts, even if knee-length, may offend.

Given that you are likely to be in the museums and ST/ Peter's for several hours, which may well be preceded by quite a long wait, I would suggest wearing clothes that you KNOW will not break the rules, and which won't annoy you after a while - for example, the wrap might be ok for going in, but would you want to waer it [adn keep adjusting it] for hours on end?

There was a recent thread on this. St. Peters is a church as is the Sistine Chapel. Shorts are not appropriate.

Easier to just bring a pair of slacks then chance it.

You should be aware that the same rules apply to other churches as well. They are often not officially enforced - but can be at times. And even if not officially enforced I have seen outraged locals (usually elderly women) drive inappropriately dressed tourists (mature German men in those sortie shorts they seem to wear to the beach) from a church with their comments.

Thank you. I have capris and some knee-length skirts. My husband will bring some slacks too. I'm encouraging him to get a pair of pants that zip off into knee-length shorts too.
