Dover Sole

I am looking for recommendations for a London restaurant which serves Dover Sole. Staying near the Green Park Tube.

You couldn't beat Wilton's at 55 Jermyn Street, quite close to Green Park Tube. It is one of London's oldest restaurants and is quite elegant and features Dover Sole. You probably know that Dover Sole is one of the priciest items on most menus, but is a real treat.

My mother and I had a wonderful dinner of Dover Sole at the Lanesborough Hotel. Their restaurant is the Conservatory and it is very elegant. On Saturday they have a band playing thoughout dinner. We actually went there on the recommendation of someone that posted on this board. It was our favorite dinner in London! Also recommend the lettuce crab rolls!!

I'm not sure where you saw the menu for Wilton's but if Dover Sole wasn't listed it is probably because it will normally be priced according to the market. But as long as Dover Sole is available I can't imagine their not having it as it is their specialty along with oysters. On the other hand if they can't get it fresh and good, I suppose they wouldn't offer it, but I don't know how often that could happen. You might want to call first just to make sure -- but that is probably true anywhere they have it on the menu.

When I don't want to spend 35 pounds or more for dover sole..I have it at La Sala Romana ..nr Glouster Rd tube station..on the corner of harrington Rd..It's as good as wilton's and I have had them both..But less than 1/2 the price!

Manzi's in Soho has very good fish. Go to wwww.london-eating.uk/ & you can check out all the fish restaurants or try Zagat.com

Why is Dover Sole so pricey?
Is there a limit on how many of these fish can be caught annually?

Lucinda- A friend who was in London this past Oct. said his wife had a spectacular dover sole at J Sheeky's He couldn't remember the price but it's not a cheap place.

Yes, Just Curious, real dover sole must come from Dover where there's a limited supply. Very often in the States, what's billed as Dover Sole isn't!

Try the Dover Sole at Rules. It's for two, and 19 pounds per person, but absolutely fabulous. Comes with spinach and frites and you will be stuffed and happy!

Laurie,

Where, exactly, is Dover? I always wondered where Dover sole got its name, suspecting it wasn't exactly Dover, Delaware! Thanks...

KHI- The south east coast of England. It's the closest point to France where you can take a ferry to Calais. Famous WWII song...There'll be blue skies over the white cliffs of Dover...

Khi, the question you should have been asking yourself is what is Dover, Delaware named after? The one in Delaware is named after the one in England, of course.
