Douro Valley wineries
My wife and I will be in Porto in Late Sept. and plan to spend a day in the Douro Valley to tour 2-3 wineries during theday trip. I see that two wineries Quinta Das Carvalhas and Quinta do Popa received favorable reviews. I expect there are other wineries that have also received favorable reviews for there public tours and tasting We would prefer touring on our own, traveling by train rather than going through a commercial tour company.
Is my idea feasible and, if so, are there other wineries that you have toured that we should consider. Also, is it easy to travel there by train.

Your biggest hurdle will be getting around once you get off the train. You would have to rent a car or hire a driver/taxi to get anywhere since it is a rural area. Carvalhas is walkable from Pinhao - although after driving the area, I wouldn't want to walk it.

Winer Tours
There are several good wineries you can visit, but you should make reservations.
