Do we need a car in Amalfi?

We are two couples going to Italy in June, flying into Rome, going immediately to the amalfi coast (Priano) for 1 week. (We would like to go to Pompeii while we are there, and also go to Capri.) We will probably take tours there. Otherwise, just look around the amalfi coast. My question - do we need a car in Amalfi?

You don't 'need' a car, but it would be nice to have for a week's stay.

I understand Praiano is near Positano, which has excellent public transportation options. I would not want to deal with the expense and hassle of not only driving a car, but parking in the various towns.

Agree with Jean about the car; From amalfi, you should be able to get a boat to Capri.

If you are willing to deal with lots of traffic and very tight parking spaces in the towns on the AC, get a car. If not.... Take a boat from Positano to Sorrento. Then take the local train to Pompeii, which is only about 30 minutes to the front gate.

Does your hotel in Praiano have parking?

If the driver has any fear of heights, I wouldn't have a car on the AC.

Also, after an international flight into Rome, you probably won't be up to driving all the way to the AC.

You certainly don't need a car, but having one might be convenient, especially if your hotel offers free parking.

The travel logistics on the AC are a complex topic that you need to understand---buy a good guide book and read various trip reports on this site---including mine when we too stayed in Praiano---click on my name above.

Meanwhile, here are my pics from that trip to get you excited.
