Do Venice canals smell in July?
We will be going to Venice in July 01. We were there in early October before and it was wonderful! I have been told, however that the canals can get pretty smelly in the summer. Is this true? Can it get bad enough to "foul" the trip? Also, how hot does it get in July? We are coming from Houston Texas and are not intimidated by a little heat. Is an air conditioned room really necessary?

Finally, the Galleria sounds great(too good to be true)! For that price, are there private bathrooms in the rooms?

Thanks for the help!

Tim,

You can get a "whiff" now and then on the smaller, back canals --but certainly nothing that would interfere with the enjoyment of Venice.

We've been to Venice in the months of November, May and July.

You can certainly expect very hot and humid at that time of year. May there was hot (mid to high 80"s) and July was well over 100 degrees.

I personally would be miserable without air conditioning at the 90 and above mark. Do remember: Air conditioned hotels in Venice usually feel cool -- but certainly not chilled like those in the states.

You
picked the wrong month as it is very
warm and with a centuries old city,
small and large canals which do change
water twice a day to the tides..Any of warm months can have the same problem.
Enjoy Venice again, Richard of La Grange Park, Il...

My wife is a Venetian and we have been there many times over the past 54 years. One of our rules is not to go in July and August. Between the heat and humidity, crowds, and possible smells, it certainly is not desirable if you have an option. How about staying in the lake country and going down to Venice for a day or two?

I arrived in Venice on July 4th a few years ago and stayed for four days. The weather was great! Not hot at all. Five days before we had been in Paris and the first two days the temp was in the 40's then the last three in the 90's. Who knows? I think the above posts are right about what you can "generally" expect. But you really never know. Get an air conditioned hotel to be safe and remember, you're not swimming in the canal. Venice is Venice, the most unique city on earth! Go and enjoy.

Thank you all! We have been there berfore, and to be honest, Venice at its worst is better than 99.9999999% of the rest of the world! (apoligies to the rest). The trip is part of a lengthy itenary (yes, the lake district is on it)and is a graduation present to a neice (hence July).

We have had horizontal icy sleet in Monaco in june and sahara like weather in Paris in july too. One of our nicest days was a Vercellies picnic in the snow! Europe is Europe and a little gamey just makes it lived in. Thanks for the tip on mosquitos as our neice has an allergy to their bites. Now we will be prepared for that too. We would not have expected them because its a salt water lagoon.

Thanks again for the truth of the matter. Safe passages and following seas!

Tim
