I've never had a problem wit MC in Italy, France, UK or Spain. One thing though is to make sure your ticket is one-way if that's all you need. I inadvertently paid for a round trip from Cordoba to Madrid (67 euros) instead of a one-way (35 euros). OUCH!

Yes, you can certainly buy your train tickets with V, MC, AMEX credit cards. That is the only I buy my tickets!
