Do I need to Book a Ferry Trip from Salerno to Positano in Advance?
We will be taking a train from Rome to Salerno and plan to take a ferry from there to Positano. Is this something that is necessary to book ahead? Or does one show up and wait in line? Is there more than one ferry line or is it a "state run" type of organization? Is it fairly obvious as to 1) how to get to a/the ferry terminal from the train station? 2)which ferry to choose from?
Thanks for any help. We have taken the ferries in Greece before but his is a new mode of Italian transportation for me. I just want to be clear on what we should do!
PS: We will be in Rome for 2 days upon arrival from Canada and then journeying to Positano. Based on previous advice I will book the train travel once we arrive so can also book this while there too - if that's the right thing to do?

Hi PN - Just turn up and go - no need to book.
'Is it fairly obvious as to 1) how to get to a/the ferry terminal from the train station? 2)which ferry to choose from?'
The sea is 3 mins walk straight in front of you as you exit Salerno station - you can´t go wrong
Just walk out along the jetty - the ticket booth is at the far end where the boat leaves.
Hope this helps ...

Well that all sounds very simple!
We leave next week - can you tell I am having a few last minute fears of the unknown?! However, that is part of the most fun of going places - in my opinion - that whole stepping out of your daily comfort zone. Based on your replies I think we will do just fine.
Thank you very much!

Hi P,
>Do I need to Book a Ferry Trip from Salerno to Positano in Advance?
No.
When we were there 1st week of Oct, there were no lines.
1. From the train station walk SW along via Clemente Mauro to the docks at Piazza della Cocordia.
See www.viamichelin.com
2. There is only one ferry.
For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):

Enjoy your visit.
