so again, given the above, i should not rent a gps per padraig, but rely on waze on my phone? i would put in the coordinates rather than address?

I've never used Waze, but Google maps certainly recognises Eircodes

Yes. Smart Phones have essentially made GPS devices obsolete.

Do you have a Smart Phone? If you have Google Maps on it just type in the location by saying the street address, or the name of the place. Like 1234 Main Street or the Hungry Bear Restaurant or Comfy Hotel and it will automatically direct you there. You don't need coordinates.
Try it at your home location. Type in Exxon Mobil station or Post Office in (your town), or type in an address of where you are going and you won't need to type in your location. It already knows where you are.
It is beyond easy. And it will tell you how long it will take to get there by car/bike/bus/etc.
