Do I need a car in Sardinia?

Hello Talkers
I am heading to Italy for about 7 weeks at the beginning of Sept. Some of my plans are made but there is still a lot of free time. I am a BEACH girl and would love to go to Sardinia, but do not want to rent a car. Feasible? Do I need one? Recommendations on where to stay sans car? I am thinking I would like to stay for a few days...Grazie!

no problem without a car to hit the beaches, etc. - I did it years ago and had a blast...trains to the major towns and frequent busses to the beaches! (this was years ago, so I stayed in youth hostels)

Public transportation is not very well organized in Sardinia, especially off season.
It all depends on you. Do you want to spend all your time in the same place or travel around? In the first case, Alghero has nice beaches.
In the second, you'll need a car or lose a lot of time waiting for busses

Yes. A car makes it easier to do some real exploring.

You should check out the locations of car rental offices in Sardinia before you leave but decide when you get to Sardinia if you want a car.

If you want to drive in Italy, don't forget you are required to carry both your driver's license and an International Driver's Permit, which in the United States is available from AAA offices.
