Dear me. I should have followed the learned advice of MaitaiTom and passed on mentioning my 40 euro dining budget...Degas now thinks I'm extravagant, and RLA thinks I'm cheap. I might have to reconsider mentioning how you can feed four (for a mere 17 euros) on a supermarket meal of bottled antipasti, frozen crepes and frozen spinach lasagna, a bottle of DOC red, and a bunch of grapes--and that it tastes delicious, too! Such an account might generate far too many comments.

Degas, since you asked, a surrey from the Borghese Gardens rents for ten euros. It's a bicycle contraption with four wheels, a steering wheel, and a canopy top. No mules in sight, unless you count dln who so mulishly insisted on a surrey experience to report back to Fodors.

Might I be so indelicate as to ask if you and the little wife are, ahem, equally matched in girth? If you are, let loose! If you're not, I have a tip: watch someone else ride a surrey. My husband is almost eighty pounds bigger than me. When we got on the bench seat of the surrey, I nearly tipped over! The load was only a little unbalanced to say the least. We had one lopsided hour in which the horizon was not, to my eyes, horizontal.

scarlett - I'm not judging dln's spending habits or financial habits but merely making a reference to her item #13 as follows:

dln - Either I'm not making myself clear, or you misunderstood me. I was not laughing AT your #13, I was applauding it because you have mentioned before that you are a stickler for meeting your budget, whatever you choose it to be, and are good at it which is very admirable, not cheap! Budgets may sometimes be high, sometimes low for anyone, but that was not my focus. It's great to disclose costs if you want to. It gives us a perspective and helps us plan our budgets. Who really wants to spend more money than they have to in order to have a great experience? I certainly didn't mean to offend and so sorry if I did.
