Cathy,
one of the best places for diving in Italy is Sicily, and exactly Siracusa.
The sea is warm, and the submarine landscape is marvellous.
I'm not an expert myself , but I have seen the broshure of the tourist information office about summer diving opportunities in Siracusa - Sicily.
There is also a diving center right in front of the place where I live that organises diving lessons and excursions.
Let me know if you want more information.
Sincerely
Dora

this summer I went to a small island near the pontine isles called Ventotene. It is charming and uncrowded and I loved it. I went snorkelling there...there are some underwater roman ruins. They have extensive diving opportunities. A boat to the island from naples was like $10 or $15 round trip and on the way back it's like a big party on the boat. email me if you want anymore info!P.S. I also went to Sicily this summer and it was quite beautiful (Taormina).
