Discover Card - Leave It at Home - No More?

Just opened a ad from my Discover Card saying now i can use it interntionally - at any place that accepts Diners Club International - if i activate my Discover Card for international use.

It says for a list of countries where Discover is now accepted - Discover.com/international

so for folks like who are getting 1-2% or 5% back on certain purchases perhaps Discover can be useful in a Europe that to my knowledge before never took Discover anywhere (escept the American Embvassy in Paris where i used it to pay for my son's passport).

As always ask what your Discover Card will charge for foreign purchases and all fees, etc. The usual is 3% with no transcation fee - some cards less and some even no charge.

Good to know. Although Japan is the only one of the new spots where i might use it, at least they are making progress.

Except in Scandinavia (and Germany, I think), you will be hard pressed to find shops and restaurants that take Diners Club. Big hotels and department stores, no problem.

Still no use to you in The Netherlands, or France Pal.

Diners Club is accepted even less than AmEx and that is saying something.

Very few places take Diner's Club cards - even in the US it's not popular. (Diner's club is one of the accounts of our parent agency so we are required to use one for our corporate card - but it is accepted by so few places that they give us one with a MasterCard logo on it - otherwise you are out of luck at almost any restaurant of shop.) And it's accepted at even fewer places in Europe.

You say in your initial post that you can use your Discover card at places which accept Diners Club. I'm just pointing out that it is extremely unpopular in Europe, so even in the countries which will accept your Discover card you will be hard put to use it if you are limited to DC accepting retailers.

Sad fate for Diners Club, the first credit card ever invented...

True kerouac, but maybe if they didn't charge retailers so much it would be more widely accepted. That is also the reason AmEx is unpopular in Europe.
