Dingle or Donegal

Looking for information about each of these areas as I may only have time to visit one. My main interest is scenery and charm. Thanks

Dingle Peninsula is chock-packed, on a per-mile basis, w/ scenery, antiquities, castles, etc. than County Donegal.

I've been to Dingle and truly enjoyed it. Actually I've enjoyed each town I've visited in Ireland.

I've not been to Donegal but I must go. The people are what bring you to Ireland - not the country.

Oh, what a decision! Both are so incredibly beautiful (and I've been to both)! Dingle is much more crowded with tourists who have 'discovered'it. Donegal is much more remote and still undiscovered. If it's scenery and charm...I'd go with Donegal.

Dayne,

Decisions, decisions...Both the Dingle Peninsula and Count Donegal have an abundance of stiking scenery. Your final decision, however, should be based on your personal preferences.

Should you visit the Dingle Peninsula - more specfically Dingle town and Slea Head - during high season, you will encounter a good many tourists. Donegal, on the other hand, is relatively tourist-free, even during high season.

If quality dining is a consideration, the nod would have to go to Dingle town, as it features several first-rate, albeit expensive, eateries, two of which are called Beginish and The Chart House. As for Donegal, you'll need to look a bit harder for quality dining.

Dingle, of course, is more accessible than Donegal, and it places you in close proximity to some of the Republic's other highly popular locations, namely Killarney National Park and the Iveragh Peninsula.

But by all means don't rule out Donegal, especially if you're someone who yearns to break free of the main tourist trail. Moreover, County Donegal puts you in close proximity to some of Ireland's most scenic and underrated counties, Sligo and Fermanagh.

Should you decide on Donegal, make a point of visiting the cliffs at Slieve League and Glenveagh National Park, hike Mount Errigal, and stay for a couple nights on the shores of Lough Eske, located just outside Donegal town.
Consider, too, staying in Dunfanaghy, home to a marvelous restaurant/accommodation, The Mill.

Best of luck.

Both areas are great for different taste - Dingle has phenomenal 'typically' Irish sites in the predominantly Irish part of the country. Donegal/Sligo ismore 'moody' in its scenary - just as beautiful but different.

Dayne:

I think it depends on where you are coming from also. I believe that I read (and thought I had responded to) a note saying you were going to be in NI. If that is the case, Donegal would make more sense. If you are going to be in the SW, go to Dingle. If you are going to be near both and are still going to be in Belfast, then the decision is tougher and you've gotten excellent comments here.

Bill
