With the Apacer portable burner you spend between $180-300 (depending on the model you get) and probably could get by with an 128MB card. You can take as many pictures & video clips as you want, use the highest resolution, and burn them to cds when you return to the hotel room. I really think it's the cheapest option if you want to take loads of pictures with no restrictions, and not have to spend time looking for cyber cafes.

The Apacer portable CD burner looks like a real handy device. It might be a bit expensive for a specialized piece of periperhal equipment, however.

Strass, I think you made the right choice. It is SO convenient to just carry a little bitty camera card and be done with the hassle.

The price curve on memory is very steep. As each bigger size comes out, the cost of the previous ones plummets. Don't ever buy more than you need, and wait until the last minute until you do!

Anyone know if the Apple iPod mini (not the full-sized one) can also store digital jpg images? (I don't think Belkin or anyone else makes a reader for that yet, right?)

I thought hauling along my laptop would be a pain, but I did and I was not sorry. I put it in a small padded laptop sleeve in my carry-on and it took up hardly any space.

I used it to upload and view my photos, typed up my daily journal (instead of hand-writing and retyping later), viewed itinerary info I had stored as .pdf files (instead of printing everything out) and used it to play music. I was also able to go online at our hotel the night before the flight home and do online check-in and catch up on e-mails.

I think I will never be able to leave home without it again.

Just got back from a 14-day trip woith a digital camera. In order of preference, I would:

1 - Take a laptop (I did, uploaded the photos daily, and burned a DVD every 4 days)

2 - get more cards

3 - cyber cafes - we used several in Italy, it would be difficult to actually upload photos through them or to burn a CD

3 (tie with above) - we found numerous places throughout Italy that would upload from cards to CD - prioces seemed reasonable, but then, it was the off-season in Italy. I am sure you will find the same in Paris or Amsterdam.

I download my photos to my laptop and will never leave home for vacation without it again. However, since my last trip, to Spain, when my hard drive crashed, I have a NEW laptop with a built-in CD burner I'll backup my photos and travel journal to each night.

1. Make sure your CDs can be read before erasing the camera memory.

2. Do not rely on your hard drive to maintain your photographs. Laptops can be dropped, stolen, or malfunction.

I've grown very attached to the little Flashtrax device we took on this last trip. Watched movies on it, listened to MP3s. Plugged compact flash cards into it directly through it's built in slot and built a folder system on the hard drive, reviewing pics and renaming as we went. Really enjoyed it and it's less than a 1/4 size of a laptop. Plus we bought it online for less than $300 for the 20GB model, including the car charger.
