Diet and Travel

I will be in Austria for about 6 weeks this summer. I will also be traveling to other places like Switzerland, Paris, and Munich on the weekends. I am on a somewhat restricted diet that does not allow high fat and fried foods. Will I have healthier alternatives available at most restaurants and markets?

I find the food in Europe much more fresh and the vegetables and fruit are plentiful and cooked in a lot of interesting and delicious ways.I do not eat red meat and have never had a problem getting all the good food I want.I think overall they might be more healthy than most American diets.

It will be very hard to find low-fat food in Austria, especially Vienna. Everything is fried and pastries are de rigeur. It will be very hard to pass up all the chocolate, sausages, weinerschnizel, cream, Sachertort, etc. you will be offered. You will just have to limit yourself to these indulgences. You can however find salads in almost every restaurant. And since the Austrians, like most Europeans, don't use salad dressings like Ranch or Bleu Cheese, instead a low-fat vinegrette, you can always order a salad!!

Good luck, you will need it in Vienna!

HI Ann, I am always dieting, and there are a few tricks you can do when travelling that should make your life easier.
While it is true that most of the traditional foods of Austria and Bavaria (weinerschnitzel etc) are heavy on the fat.. just avoid them.
Go to the local markets, get bread and vegetables, order salads and sandwiches while eating out, split dishes, if you are staying in hotels that offer b=fest, skip the pastries and meat and request scrambled eggs and dry toast or a bowl of muesli...(granolish stuff that's WAY better) skim milk is easy to come by and believe it or not if you are utterly at a loss...McDonalds, serves a cheap green salad without all the mayonaise-y things on it that you tend to find in most of Europe. You should not have any problems at all, I always loose weight when travelling.
