Did you get any travel books or other gifts for Christmas? Any of them worth sharing with fellow Fodorites?

I got some WONDERFUL coffee table travel books (for my husband) from Daedalus Books, www.daedalusbooks.com,<BR>which has limited quantities of high quality books at bargain prices.(No, I have nothing to do with this company!!)<BR>One is "Over Europe": aerial views of European cities and sites. Texxt by Jan Morris. Large, hard-back, 250 pages, stunning all-color photos. It must've been at least $70 originally; I paid $20! Since my recent trip I recognize many of these sites, but see them here from a completely different, thrilling point of view.<BR>Another is "Paris: Portrait of a City."<BR>About 6x6, all color, 240 pages. No people in these photos, just the most exquisite pictures of architecture, sculpture, doorways, gates, etc. I've ever seen. Plus a lot of historical info. For $5!!<BR>Another: "Le Chiens de Paris"--Amusing back & white photos of Parisians and their dogs, some vintage. $5. (They also have "Le Chats de Paris".)<BR>And "Earth to Spirit: In search of Natural Architecture" by David Pearson--architecture that is designed to work in harmony with nature. 150 pages, all-color photos. Fascinating historical references, too. $5.<BR>I'm so happy with these books, I had to share them with you.

Just got another gift today-a calendar of Provence! Oh boy, just what I need to while away the dreary winter months, dreaming about wandering through fields of lavender and shopping for linens and eating and drinking all that good Provencal cooking and wine! Maybe the tickets to France are still in the mail~C

Not exactly a Christmas present, but a book lent by a friend for my upcoming Paris trip--'The Flanuer' by Edmund White (think that's right). A small hardback, perfect for traveling, about wandering around Paris--very interesting so far, and can't wait to get there!

My best friend gave me "Paris-Popout Map" (that I think she got from Borders) for Christmas. Not expensive, but cute (3" x 5") and perfect for me. Very unobtusive!<BR><BR>It has a listing of museums & historical sites plus a street index. And, amazingly, it all fits into this little booklet-thingymabobber. All the major spots are highlighted on the map so it's very easy to see. It even has a Metro/RER plastic laminated map on the back. My Plan de Paris I procured at my hotel last spring is in TATTERS right now. I am very happy! : )

Madeline in London.lol I really do buy my own books. But someone did give me James Michener's, Hawaii. It is a historical novel on the development of Hawaii so far impressive. Starts out at the islands formation so it is the very very very beginning of Hawaii's story.

Apart from a novel (a "psychological thriller" set in Vienna), I didn't receive anything directly travel-related. Just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading about everyone else's travel goodies!! And also that I am still intrigued as to what those people who received 4 foot high Eiffel Towers ended up doing with them!!??

Hi All - <BR><BR>A few notable additions to the Scotland library:<BR><BR>1. Castles and Ancient Monuments of Scotland -- published by the Daily Telegraph. Full color photographs throughout, casual writing style, and great regional maps which pinpoint sites in relation to major cities.<BR><BR>2. Oxford Archaeological Guide to Scotland -- Black & white diagrams and photographs, intelligent and intelligible writing style, and adequate regional maps which sometimes show site location in relation to major cities.<BR><BR>3. Michelin Green Guide -- to augment the "general" collection<BR><BR>4. Romantic Scotland -- haven't had a chance to check this one out in-depth.<BR><BR>Kate
